TEENS: (Age 13 to 17)
It is more challenging than ever to be a teenager in America. Fear and distractions seem to be at an all-time high, and our media-savvy kids are well aware of it. Our program strives to provide our teens with the self-confidence and focus they need to make it in today’s world. Students engage in a fun activity that is physically rewarding and challenging while in a safe environment with positive role models. Students also develop positive character traits such as perseverance, goal-setting, integrity and discipline. Teens find that our martial arts program is high energy, exciting, and motivating. Students will enjoy the workout as well as the life long friendships that are built exercising and training with people who have similar goals.
Our Teenage Program focuses on the skills needed to best prepare and excel in their college experience. With the increasing number of college applications submitted each year, colleges are looking more to the extracurricular activities and achievements for basis of acceptance of academically similar applications. With a martial arts training program, students not only further develop the physical and mental skills useful in a college environment, but they also learn and develop one of the most effective self defense systems around today.
Achieving Black Belt, though still impressive to college application reviewers, unfortunately does not carry the same weight that it used to 10 years ago (mainly due to explosion of martial art studio growth and the resulting exponential growth of black belts). We, at USSD Commack, have created the Service and Mentoring Program for teens that expands on the commendable achievement of earning a black belt.
The Service and Mentoring Program is for the teenage student to mentor students in the children’s class, and help develop the child to his or her full potential. This not only builds leadership and mentoring skills for the teenager, but also provides a unique opportunity to both describe the achievement of earning a black belt and the positive work done as a black belt.
- This program is designed to empower top students to take leadership positions within in the school and society. The curriculum focuses on character development and values based leadership training and offers young people a fun way to learn command and responsibility. The students will train in public speaking, performance and leadership skills and will apply and develop these skills while performing a wide variety of martial art routines. The demo team also learns techniques that are not taught in the regular programs. These include advanced kata, weapons and advanced self-defense techniques. The team performs demonstrations at different venues throughout the year and competes as a demo team in local martial art tournaments. The demo team is open to 8 years olds and above with a minimum rank of purple belt. If interested talk to one of the instructors and they will arrange a tryout for you. Good Luck!
